I stumbled upon this image on Facebook today and couldnt help but think it perfectly sums up the frustration of creative people everywhere. The economy has barreled most of us creative types into financial destitude and the prospect of doing another 'freebie' to promote one's self is just unbearable to conceive. It is stifling. Much of our industry survives on favors, freebies and good will but in these times it is easy to see how one more favor could cause a creative enterprise to go bust.

Of course the implications of this dialogue between craigslist poster and postee are much more complicated. There are times when doing a freebie is worth it. And perhaps it might not be so ridiculous for a restauranteur to do a free social event at a musician's house if the audience are influential people who might spread the word about the great fare. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that any reputable restauranteur would respond to a craigslist ad with such a proposition. Which again poses the question: "How much is your time worth and how low will you go?"

Even though I live in Hollywood, I am very in tuned with what is happening in my hometon of Toronto. I also owe my first influences to this city. Here are 2 names that are synonymous with Toronto Hip Hop. These are arguably 2 of the most important players in the dissemination of the genre in the 90's. DJ X hosted a weekly underground Hip Hop show called the POWER MOVE and Mastermind hosted his own show called STREET JAM. They were both instrumental in my becoming a DJ and my subsequent entry into the in business where I am today. Mastermind however played a closer roll in who I am. He may not remember the guest hour he gave me on his radio show circa 1996, but that was a huge deal to me. It was a nerve-racking experience. I remember it fondly. Cheers to these 2 pioneers. Special shout to ONE METHOD on the reunion of these once rivals. Check out the 10year anniversary mixtape below. Its a solid listen if you dig the golden era of the music.

DRAKE dropped his sophomore album today. It has been all the buzz for the past two weeks with a marketing campaign that rivals the mid nineties heyday of hip hop. Its hard to turn on the radio and not hear Aubrey. His singing/rapping style has taken over the contemporary sound, making every new rapper analogous to the kid. Dude is definitely on his game and better than he ever was before lyrically. The album is tight, stronger than THANK ME LATER, but still a notch behind his classic SO FAR GONE mixtape. Today I tip my hat to the ambassador of my home city. Keep up the good work.

I dont make it a habit of re-posting big stories from other blogs but in this case I must express my own love for this new DJ KHALED, DRAKE, RICK ROSS, LIL WAYNE joint. I first heard the track a couple weeks ago and was blown away. Its hella dope. I had the pleasure of watching the ensemble rehearse the live performance at the BET AWARDS sound checks and met the entire gang. YMCMB is definitely at the top of the game and these are the premiere artists in the game...all on one song. The video directed by GIL GREEN premiered the next day on the BET AWARDS red carpet. The concept is not all that mind-blowing. DRAKE exclaims that he was tryna show the more mundane and drabbier side of the glam life by shooting it in his unfinished South Beach condo. Love the idea of showing the flip side of fame. The execution however perhaps could have been a little better. While DRAKE has no problem with vulnerability, I suspect Mr Green may have had a harder time convincing the other artists to let go their 'swag'. I was not entirely convinced of the loneliness of being at the top. Id love to take a stab at this concept. Here's the clip...

Its that time of year again when we all in the industry stop and take a look back at the work we've done. The Much Music Video Awards (MMVAs) are upon us again and this little shop has pulled in a whopping 17 nominations. For the 3rd consecutive year The NE Inc presents the Art Of Music Video gallery exhibit showcasing in downtown Toronto on Sat June 18 2011 (tomorrow). The scale of this event has grown as more and more music video enthusiasts realise that the genre no longer lives on TV. It has found a home on the web and now on the walls of a photo gallery. The NE Inc executive director RT! has assembled his band of brothers (and sister) for a celebration of what we directors like to consider art. Come see music videos in a new perspective, the way the film artist meant for it to be consumed. This years exhibit will be bigger and better than ever with industry tastemakers, celebrities and film enthusiast in attendance and installations that push the imagination. Who knows, maybe one day you will see this exhibit at the R.O.M. in T.O., the GUGGENHEIM in NY or the GETTY in LA. It is an exciting time to be making music videos. Cheers to that!

Before Anthony 'Durty Keyz' James passed away last year he had started work on a compilation album called Keyz of Life. The plan was for him to work on that while his partner, Burd, started work on his comp, Burd’s Eye View. In tandem they were to complete both projects and further solidify themselves as new producers in the game.

After Keyz passed away last summer unexpectedly, Burd took it upon himself to complete Keyz of Life in memory of his friend/brother/production partner. And so…

…it is with great pleasure that I present to you the first single from Keyz of Life! They actually gave this beat to Shi over a year ago and she had the song written before he passed. She was generous enough to contribute the song to the album which (based on the vibe and content) is a perfect lead single for the project (imho). This is also Shi’s debut solo single and if you’ve been following what’s been going on in the city then you know that Shi Wisdom is a name that a lot of people have been talking about (and for good reason as you’re about to find out).

You’ve had almost no local album reviews, when D-Sisive, Rich Kidd, Empire, Cadence Weapon and other Canadian acts have released so much great music lately (at least you didn’t miss Buck 65). And you haven’t done an interview on a local hip hop artist/event in who knows how long. When the KOTD Rap Battle League has been featured on MTV, spans 5 cities across Canada, has millions of YouTube views, and has featured MCs from New York, California, Miami, and the UK, why have you never once featured KOTD in NOW? The same questions linger for ‘The Ultimate MC’ Freestyle contest on AUXTV, hosted by Bishop Brigante, now underway in 4 different Canadian cities. Your lack of support for our city’s hip hop scene is completely unacceptable, and on behalf of the community, I request you immediately improve your coverage. If you can critically assess society on every level, you must allow yourself to be critically assessed.

The most egregious example of your music department’s glaring flaws is found in this week’s CMW wrap-up. You review only the Jay Electronica concert, when CMW 2011 featured a few other hip hop acts (R.A. the Rugged Man, Angerville, Unknown Mizery, Mayhem Morearty, Made Wade, Magnum K.I., etc.). Yet your most blatant omission came when you failed to even do a concert review of your coveted cover story from last week, Janelle Monae. How she can headline a show with new school Canadian rap legend Shad K at the Royal York Hotel and you not have a writer there (to try and describe her phenomenal, sold-out concert’s Cirque du Soleil-like surreality) is beyond journalistic failure. And finally, Drake is the host of the upcoming Juno Awards here in Toronto at the Air Canada Center, and it would be a perfect opportunity to finally interview to him… if your music editor thought it was a story worth writing about. I would have been honored to do a “Mindbender Interviews Drake” article for you, and I think it would have been excellently received, like my RZA or Nas interviews were, or my 5-page “Representing the T-Dot” piece was. But my repeated offers to forget the unjust dismissal I received from the music editor a few years ago and continue to write for the magazine have been met with further rejection. I am STILL open to look past the problems and be part of the solution. I know what needs to be done, and I keep trying do my part to help around here… but there are people with power in entrenched positions in this city who don’t care to evolve the state of business and industry in our stifled city, and that’s why we are perpetually stuck in the same place, if not moving backwards, in our attempts to become the globally-respected musical mecca Toronto has had the potential to be for so very, very long.

Straight up and down: Toronto is arguably the best hip hop city in the world in 2011… but you wouldn’t know it by reading NOW. Don’t worry though, you are certainly not the only media outlet not supporting Canadian hip hop. But you used to be the best, so you must be held accountable first. I hope this laissez-faire attitude towards a huge segment of Toronto culture changes immediately, because you are missing out on nothing less than music world history unfolding by sleeping on Toronto hip hop in 2011.

If you need help from the hip hop community, we would be happy to provide it to you. All you need to do is accept it.

It is where I did my undergrad in Film Studies and met some life long college buddies. But I digress. SHAD is one of the illest contemporary Canadian MC's. His word play and metaphors are sharp and hypnotic. He's made a bunch of noise with his recent TSOL album. I havent actually heard it, but every cut Ive heard is solid. In light of the recent news, I thought it was appropriate to post this personal retrospective on Canada's first urban radio station FLOW 93.5. On Wednesday night I had an hour-long conversation with a close friend and on-air personality at the now defunct radio station. He sounded confused and upset, but accepting of what had seemed inevitable in the eyes of many people who had business with the organization over the past 10 years. It was a sad night for everyone who has anything to do with the urban music industry in Toronto and Canada. I too was hurt, even though I live some 4000 km away from the city I will always call home.

FLOW came on the scene right at the time when a generation who grew up on Hip-Hop was coming of age...my generation. I was a bright-eyed sophomore at film school when Milestone Corp took the airwaves. There was a feeling of triumph knowing that 'our' music and culture had a home after years of being locked out by mainstream society. FLOW became the beacon for all who shared a genuine love for contemporary black music and culture. In subsequent years it became the cornerstone of a fledgling urban industry music, TV, art, business and social events. Many great partnerships, opportunities and ideas came from the existence of that place. Im not sure many people truly appreciate how integral that hub was in our community. It gave urban artists a place to be heard and every offshoot industry a reason to exist. I too am indebted. Shows like SOCA THERAPY, RIDDIM TRACK, THE REAL FREQUENCY and OTA-LIVE were the flagships of their respective genre's of music.

With the demise of FLOW in its former manifestation, the industry will surely take a hit. The Urban industry and its players have matured over the last 10 years and that is in part in thanks to DENIM JOLLY's venture. The debate whether he sold us out is for another conversation. This conversation is about being thankful for what we had. I am peeved... but thankful. FLOW 93.5 allowed me my first opportunity as a young director to venture into the ethnically un-inclusive world of COMMERCIAL AD agency creative. My first full scale TV spec spots were a campaign for the radio station. It was called SLICE OF LIFE.

Below are the three spots that were produced on two cold shoot days in 2004 with the help of many friends, 5000 feet of short-ends (leftover film stock from TV shows) and a dream to be great. NICOLE JOLLY helped me get them shown at TAXI ad agency and they were a big part of my reel for a few years (until my writing and direction got better lol). They were'nt spectacular but they were important getting my feet in the door of the 'big leagues'. The memories are vivid and my hope is that whatever comes of this station, there is always an entity in that city that inspires black kids to be great. Good night FLOW, and good luck!

Kanye West dropped his min-movie RUNAWAY last weekend and Ive already watched it 3 times. I found it extremely inspiring. It has a sincere sensibility and feels alot like the post-modern films I watched back in film school. This was the imagery that got me excited about filmaking and music videos in particular. As a medium, music videos have traditionally encouraged experimentation and abstraction. many of RUNAWAY's themes and ideas fall right in line with some of the earlier bright-eyed ideas I wrote as treatments.My producer would look at me like I was crazy or simply naiive. Nothing is impossible. Emotions are visceral and as this film shows, it takes little dialogue to evoke feeling. That is of course if it is done right. Good work Mr West and Mr Williams who I am sure had a close hand in making this masterpiece opus.

Came across this little ditty today. Toronto rapper BIG SOXX dropped his EP 'VERSIONS' on the weekend and here is a first look at some of the interpretations he has covered on the joint. SOXX teams up with one of my fave rock vocalists. EMILY HAINES of METRIC inspired the name of this song and her vocals are absolutely mesmerizing. SOXX has always had a way of transcending genre in music. This one is a home run. Nice work homie.

Here it is folks. After weeks of anticipation the new RICH KIDD video has dropped. It premiered on www.1loveTO.com last night to raving reviews. There has been alotta chatter on the internet about this artist and his debut video. Im really happy with the visuals. The idea of a 'bucket storm' is one Ive had for a long time. It came together beautifully with the photography of Christopher Walters and the ludicrous editing of my main man Dan Racicot. Bossy Girls styled the clip and brought the best of what they do. This is a BIG BUDGET looking video. If people only knew how much it cost to produce... theyll never know. That'll be our little secret. lol ;)

I was just setting up my NFL fantasy football league this week and this song was playing in my head. It is arguably one of Toronto rapper K-OS's most successful singles. Just saw new music posted on my fave Tdot blog CITYONMYBACK.com today. The homie ROCHESTER drops his new joint today produced by BURD & KEYZ. WHOA! This shit bangs hard. I first got a snippet of it couple months ago when Burd was out in LA. He played it for me in my whip on Sunset Blvd and I almost lost my mind. The drums go hard on this joint and JUICE spits that fire. B&K, Toronto's fastest rising name in production departs from their highly melodic compositions for a more head-banging beat. Im sure 'drum-man' Andrew "Burd" had a lot to do with this but deceased partner Anthony "Keyz" will definitely be missed on the piano riffs. ROCHESTER is going hard this year. Anyone with West-Indian parents will understand. This was a fun joint to shoot and one will notice crates and crates of vinyl that adorn the basement set. Stumbled up on this a couple days ago on CITYONMYBACK.com Toronto rapper JDIGGZ's new video for his summer joint GET MONEY. Now Ill be honest, Ive never really been a fan of the kid but this joint is niiice. DIGGZ comes with a real catchy flow and rides the bouncy rhythm impeccably with his spit. Director Chris Strikes nails it with the edit of this clip though the cinematography leaves a little to be desired. A potentially funny bridge scene with Toronto comic TRIXX starts off great but kinda flattens out not delivering any hard hard laughs that this comic can deliver no prob. Directing comedy is no easy feat, we've all battled with the funny. It comes with practice and falling on your face a few times. Looking forward to seeing more TRIXX in future video cameos as his star continues to rise. Id certainly consider casting him when the right role comes along. Here's a look at the new video...

JHEVON and PAT K hi-jack a popular late nineties boy-band hook to make a very radio friendly track. This seems to be the trend in Hip-Hop these days. Id be lying if I didnt say Ive done 1 or 2 of these crossover joints. lol I guess it is what it is, but hip-hop purists will be waiting to here something a little more gritty from the artist/designer who clearly has no problem with the highfashion and beautiful women. WOW! Thats all I can really say. To express my feeling about how correct T-dot native DRAKE came on this track/video would be a colossal undertaking. The combination of Aubrey Graham and director Anthony Mandler is pretty beautiful. Kanye West's production on this song makes up fro the wack as visuals he pitched back in the summer of '09 (BEST I EVER HAD). I really admire Drizzy's commitment to his art and allowing the artists he works with to work with impunity. Every creative endeavor takes some risk. Sometimes its a huge failure but sometimes you hit it out the park. FIND YOUR LOVE is a homerun! Drake shows his solid acting chops and Mandler commands the story telling in a way that allows the video to play without subtitles. Most Torontonians would have no problem with the Jamaican patois but Im sure my American friends appreciated the strong use of body language and time-tested storytelling conventions to 'get-it'. I recently had the pleasure of working with ROCHESTER aka JUICE on his new video single ONE NIGHT featuring DANIEL DALEY. 12 hour shoot ran on schedule with only minor snags here and there. It was my first time working with this duo on a very conceptual video. Its gonna be dope when its released. With producer nineteen85 at the helm, the pair have created a Canadian radio hit. Im excited to see how it charts internationally. With fresh visuals from ya boy, I think we can expect to see these boys in heavy rotation at the networks. Long time homie and NE INC label-mate Randall 'RT!' Thorne was a collaborator on this joint. The veteran director's guidance and mentorship was priceless. TR & TEF back to the grind

I just recently finished shooting a new joint for Zambian / Canadian hip hop duo TR & TEF. A gruelling 15hr shoot all over the Toronto megacity. This is gonna be a pretty slick video. It is currently in post. The single is a mid-tempo banger and very differentg from their first single and Mewa collaboration. Fans will be happy to know theyve ditched the autotune but kept the same strong hooks and clever wordplay. Video is slated for release later this year.
